From the plane which flaps the wings to the artificial heart

An historical introduction provides a perspective on the fascinating links between electricity, magnetism and classical mechanics. Different types of "electro-active" materials are then presented, with live physical experiments and/or videos illustrating the phenomena of the piezo-electricity, and the characteristics of magneto-rheological fluids and shape
memory alloys. Further experiments demonstrate the technical opportunities provided by such materials in as diverse fields as aeronautics, domotics and medicine. Finally, two concrete examples of recent research activities are presented, one
related to the concept of "intelligent wing" with controlled deformations, and the second illustrating a new concept of "electro-active artificial heart". The conference is linked
to "The Marvels of Science".
