Conference
A reason to hope
Jane Goodall. Introduces: Elisabetta Visalberghi
For the greater part of the Twentieth Century animals were considered by scientists to be little more than machines: a kind of automatons, tyrannised by the arrogance of their own instincts. The hypothesis that they could have a thought, feelings or motivations in some way similar to our own was long ridiculed by psychologists and biologists. In her studies Jane Goodall instead showed that chimpanzees manifest behaviours which were previously considered to be solely exclusive to humans: the construction and use of tools, the presence of a rich emotional life, the ability – as occurs with humans – for both noble and despicable acts. It is precisely for this reason, as the scholar herself maintains, that the observation of their behaviour not only allows us to better understand primitive humans, but also contemporary humans.
