Ethical, Legal and Social Aspects of Nanotechnology-Based Medicine

Antonio Autiero, Donald Bruce, Sjef Gevers, Klaus Weltring

As this round table underlines, nanotechnology has considerable potential for applications in medicine: nanomedicine responds to our expectations in dealing with some hard-to-treat diseases. However, it is not a panacea.
Applying these extremely sophisticated technologies always raises ethical, social and even legal questions due to the conscious and responsible participation of patients in treatments using new technologies. The basic problem concerning the relations between the anthropological sphere, the human body and the mechanical and electronic instruments involved needs to be considered as a top priority in order to give a balanced opinion on whether to accept or refuse nanomedicine.
