Re-Urbanization in Shanghai and the 2010 Expo

Shi Ling Zheng. Introduces: Manuela Arata

Since the 80s, China has witnessed a rapid urban transformation caused by industrialisation and by the change in the economic and political systems. In particular, the city of Shanghai has rapidly developed due to the spread of its suburban area and to the growth of the Pudong district, the financial and commercial centre of the city. To add to this fact, the forthcoming 2010 Expo is a great occasion for the future of the city and it will be an important factor for its internationalisation. At the same time, Shanghai is developing a program for the protection of its urban and architectural heritage aimed at safeguarding a large area of the city.
