Archaeology and Cultural Heritage - (in French)
A New Way of Seeing thanks to Infrared Rays

Paul Dumas. Introduces: Mario Rocca

Materials such as colours for painting or make-up and pharmaceutical products have been produced since time immemorial. Detailed studies have shown that human beings quickly developed complex scientific techniques and approaches in order to optimize every preparatory step: the extraction and processing of minerals and natural organic compounds, as well as the chemical preparation of new compounds. Thanks to infrared rays and to the chemical identification enabled by their portion of the light spectrum, it is possible to understand how artistic and pharmaceutical practices have developed throughout the ages. We will discover that some products which are now considered particularly dangerous were once an integral part of pharmaceutical activity.
