Exhibition
A Perfect Forest
This exhibition recreates a path through a rainforest, presenting the Rainforest Alliance’s prerequisites for the issue of its certification. This American non-profit organisation sets reference standards for sustainable agriculture in tropical countries.
The path is organised in nine steps; each one deals with one of the needed requisites:
- Preservation of the ecosystem;
- Protection of fauna and flora;
- Equal shares and good working
conditions for the employees;
- Relations with communities;
- Integrated management of
agrochemical products;
- Regular waste recycling;
- Preservation of water supplies;
- Fair policies of soil exploitation;
- Planning and monitoring actions of
the environmental impact.
A full immersion into the rainforest with extremely effective images, enhanced by the typical sounds of the rainforest, pictures of untouched nature, short movies about the production cycle of bananas and life on a plantation.
In particular, this exhibition will provide the occasion to present the Chiquita Nature & Community Project, in the setting in which the institution of the new Nogal natural reserve took place; this wildlife oasis is located in the biological corridor of San Juan-La Selva, in an area used as a banana farm, and represents an authentic example of eco-sustainable agriculture, where the demands and desires of man and of the natural habitat are harmonized with those of the law of productivity.
The major goals of the project are: the further extension of the area through reforestation campaigns; the defence of biodiversity; the integration of local communities in the management of the programme as well as in the teaching and unbiased educational activities for visitors.
In January 2006, following a decree of the President of the Republic of Costa Rica, the Nogal area was officially acknowledged as a private Nature Reserve.
Pamphlets and publicity hand-outs about the event are freely available to visitors.
