Science and Philosophy
Lectio Magistralis

Hilary Putnam. Introduces: Mario De Caro

It is widely held that philosophy has nothing to do with the natural sciences, neither in terms of method, its content, or its purposes.
An opposing point of view – which over the last years has gained remarkable credibility above all in the Anglo-Saxon context – asserts that philosophy must be considered a continuation of science. Following this second idea, therefore, philosophical concepts that cannot be traced back to scientific concepts, at least in principle, have to be abandoned. Putnam opts for a standpoint halfway between the two: philosophical theories should be consistent with that what science ascertains about the world, but in the mindset of a conceptual pluralism that allows philosophy to retain its legitimacy and its autonomy.
