The Future of Biology - (In French)
A Rapidly Changing Science

Michel Morange

Throughout the 20th Century, Biology has found itself face to face with some important transformations. Molecular biologists described some levels of organisation that were unknown until then, and they discovered new, unexpected phenomena such as the existence of the genetic code. Genomics and post-Genomics were to follow Molecular Biology and today they give us a somewhat more comprehensive picture of organisms. While synthetic biology nurtures the hope of creating new organisms to satisfy our whims, great leaps forward have been made in theories of evolution.
Could such a rapid development mean that previous scientific approaches were a failure?
Michel Morange tends to believe that the future of biology is not to be found in a new “revolutionary” idea, but in the elaboration of already existing explanations of organic phenomena thus allowing us to have a comprehensive vision of the topic.
