The Infinite Gift

Charles Yang. Introduces: Massimo Piattelli Palmarini

The first word a child says is a unique and unforgettable event for its parents.
What lies behind this mostly unconscious process? Several studies have proved that newly born infants are already able to recognize the sounds of their mother tongue.. How can they do this?
“The Infinite Gift” introduces readers to the mechanisms lying at the basis of language learning. Charles Yang, who fits in perfectly well with the school of thought inaugurated by Noam Chomsky, affirms that when children are born, they have the potential to speak any language and when they grow up, they unconsciously select the grammar belonging to the linguistic environment surrounding them and they abandon other grammars. So Yang appears to be telling us that the next time you hear your toddler make a mistake while speaking, it may not be a real mistake: maybe at that very moment their grammar is perfectly correct for Chinese, Navajo or ancient Greek.
