What is Consciousness?
Salvatore Maria Aglioti, Michel Bitbol, Matthieu Ricard. : Pier Luigi Luisi
The question "What is Consciousness?" is undoubtedly intriguing and extremely timely. Several different disciplines are nowadays attempting to provide their own answer to all questions that are naturally sparked off by this topic: what is the relation between brain/mind/consciousness? is consciousness just a form of perception? is an emergent property of the brain, having then a material basis? Or is instead something that cannot be reduced to neurons and emotions?? Four internationally renowned experts try to tackle these questions: philosopher Michel Bitbol, a leading expert in quantum mechanics; Tibetan monk Matthieu Ricard, a biologist who has now become the translator and a close collaborator of the Dalai Lama; Salvatore Maria Aglioti, internationally renowned for his studies on "phantom limbs". In order to somehow focus the large issue on consciousness, the experts are invited to address mostly one specific question: is consciousness primary, or is material-based??The round table is organised and chaired by Pier Luigi Luisi, biochemistry professor at the University of Roma3, who has been a member of the Mind and Life Institute for many years.
