The Weight of Numbers

Simon Ings

In his book “The Weight of Numbers”, Simon Ings breaks our universe into a thousand pieces, presenting us with an exploded perspective view – as in Ikea instructions – offering an alternative version of the last 60 years of world history. Following the destinies of ten people, intertwined in an enormous puzzle of micro-narrative sequences following the style of Don DeLillo, the madness and chaos of modern life are revealed in a melancholy, lyrical and cruel way. There is no space for sentimentalism: every human frailty is filtered through a prism and plainly flung onto the white paper. Scene after scene, a humanity oppressed by the burden of millions of possibilities takes shape. Sense, cause and effect are surgically replaced by probability, coincidences and connections: «We survive because we pretend. Life is too rich, too complex, too uncertain. Life refuses method».
