Moral Mind
The Natural Origins of Good and Evil

Marc D. Hauser. Introduces: Vittorio Bo

The current theme of common sense implies that moral decisions should be taken following what society believes to be right or wrong. This standpoint tends to back up the conviction that our moral psychology is guided exclusively by experience and education.
The revolutionary theory presented during this conference puts together the moral and evolutionary theory proposed by Charles Darwin: according to Marc Hauser, moral rules would have deeply rooted unconscious origins developed over millions of years: he calls these origins the “universal moral grammar”. It is possible to find out our moral roots through the analysis of some linguistic parameters, with particular reference to the generative grammar of Noam Chomsky. In order to support this theory, the author presents the results of some empirical tests involving more than 250,000 people from 120 different Countries. These tests assess moral knowledge in cases of psychopathology and identify fundamental moments in the history of moral philosophy.
