Heretical Thoughts on Science and Society

Freeman Dyson, Tullio Regge. : Vittorio Bo

“As a scientist, I do not pretend to be sure of anything and I assume the right to be sceptical of everything”. Freeman Dyson talks about the six “heresies” on science and society: the USA will not be the leading nation in the world for more than another century; the great number of discussions on global warming is only the result of media-hype; the Sahara will be a natural paradise again if global warming continues; biotechnologies will be domesticated and shall dominate our existence as in the case of the incredibly successful world of informatics. As well as this, biotechnologies will lead to plants and animals sharing their genes, thus increasing the number of species and making solar energy cheaper and more accessible. The great physicist, who is the assistant of Hans Bethe and Richard Feynman, shows that hope is not only good for our health, but it is also supported by solid scientific evidence.
