Forbidden Colours A Journey through Time Discovering the Secrets and the "Recipes" of the Painters of the Past
Knowing something about the pigments and dyes which make up a work of art can help us to understand not only what colours an author prefers and what kind of techniques he or she uses, but also the authenticity of a work and what substances have to be used in order to maintain the original nature of a painting while restoring it. You can experiment how colours are prepared thanks to three work-benches concerned with the techniques of tempera, oil and watercolour media. It is possible to use mineral pigments and some other authentic “ingredients” such as eggs or resins. During the exhibition there will be a demonstration of a non-destructive pigment investigation applied directly to the surface of a painting by means of a micro-Raman spectroscope. The painting “Ritratto del Cane Roldano"(Portrait of the Dog Roldano) by Aurelio Lomi (circa 1600) used for the demonstration was loaned by the Palazzo del Principe.
